Mervyn Miller is an Architect / Planner who has researched environmental history for many years. In 1981 he received a Ph.D from Birmingham University for a study of the life and work of Sir Raymond Unwin, the planner of Letchworth Garden City and also of Hampstead Garden Suburb.
During 14 years as Principal Planning Officer for North Hertfordshire District Council, he played a key role in the designation of Letchworth as a Conservation Area.
Dr Miller is a leading international authority on the Garden City, and has participated worldwide in international conferences on urban planning history. He has
written and lectured extensively.
A member of the Letchworth Garden City Architectural Heritage Group, in 2000 he was appointed President of Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust,
after 21 years’ service on the Trust Board. He has been Architectural Adviser to The Lutyens Trust since 1985.
In recognition of 25 years’ contribution to the conservation
of the historic built environment, Dr Miller was awarded a Visiting Fellowship by Oxford Brookes University in 1998. In addition to his academic work, he has undertaken extensive
consultancy work for English Heritage and is a busy architect and planning consultant. Since 1974, he had lived in Ashwell, north Hertfordshire.
